VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES - 15 HOURS OF SERVICE REQUIRED FOR INDUCTION

Any activity that a member performs that benefits another (outside of family chores) without being paid can count for service hours.  NJHS members are expected to perform 15 hours of service before the Induction Ceremony in May.  At least 5 hours must be 'acknowledged' by an adult who is not a parent or guardian.

Ideas for volunteer service hours:

- most faith based organization activities

- most scouting activities

- helping at elementary school activities

- tutoring/helping younger students with school work (siblings count)

- volunteering to sort food with the Montgomery County Food Bank

- cleaning up trash in a neighborhood park (do not clean along roadways)

- search "Woodlands online volunteering" for volunteer opportunities suitable for 8th graders.

* Members will need to turn in their completed volunteer log on or before the meeting in May 2021.

* Volunteer opportunities communicated through the school will be posted on the website, listed outside room 112 and communicated at meetings.

* If you would like to suggest an activity for the entire membership, we need notification 2 months prior to the event to be able to discuss at Officers/Committee meetings for approval and then announce at an NJHS meeting.  Please fill out the form available at the bottom of the page and return to Mrs. Horrell.

If you sign up to volunteer and then cannot, it is YOUR responsibility to notify the group/organizer of your cancellation so that another member can sign up to volunteer.

VOLUNTEER LOG

This is a possible format for members to keep track of their volunteer service hours.  Make sure to get an adult who is also working the event to sign your log! 5 hours must be signed by someone who is not a parent or guardian.

Blank copies of the volunteer log are located outside room 112.

WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA FUNDRAISER - MAY NOT HAPPEN IN 2020

The fundraiser for NJHS is held to pay for the yearly membership fee with NASSP.  These funds also pay for treats during member meetings.

Wreaths may be purchased to honor veterans directly from the Wreaths Across America Houston website. https://waahouston.com/  Please note:  All members who sell wreaths in memory of specific individuals located at the cemetery lay the wreaths on those graves.  If this is not possible, contact WAA Houston to be sure a wreath is placed on the grave.

The NJHS yearly fundraiser is selling wreaths to lay on the grave of veterans through the Wreaths Across America, WAA  organization.

The fundraiser begins in early November and ends before Thanksgiving.  Members sell wreaths and the money is given to WAA to purchase the wreaths. No wreaths are delivered through members. All members who sell wreaths in memory of specific individuals located at the cemetery lay the wreaths on those graves.

NJHS gets a percentage of the total sales. Information and order forms will be given at the November member meeting.

Members are able to earn 4 hours of community service by laying wreaths at the city wide ceremony at Houston National Cemetery on Saturday, December 19, 2020.  Members are responsible for their own transportation to and from the event. Go to https://waahouston.com/ for event information.
